Film for Change
Film for Change: transforming community through the power of story, laughter, art and music.
We produce, promote and present socially relevant media and present an annual festival of film and the related arts that celebrates the art of being human and the craft of being artist. At Film for Change, we believe stories shape and transform who we are and what we do both individually and collectively. We strive to work with filmmakers, storytellers, artists, musicians and changemakers to bring about a more tolerant and compassionate world through educational workshops, lectures, screenings and responsible use of community resources.
Initiatives
Film Fest Channel: In July 2010, Film for Change and Comcast will launch a V.O.D. channel featuring the best films from the 2009 Albuquerque Film Festival and selected works to showcase the festival, our filmmakers (both local and national) and the stories they wish to share with the world.
Film for Change Retreat: Connecting storytellers to Nature. This will be a two day retreat for invited guests to participate in our new initiative and partnership with the Aldo Leopold Society that will bring the narrative of the earth to the storytellers. Reconnecting to the past, living in the moment and being better equipped to move into the future are the aims of this program. We will head to Taos, the land Dennis Hopper loved, and then experience a llama trek through the wilderness before settling in for an outdoor movie in the historic mining town of Red River. The next day will begin with a full day of white water rafting through the Gorge, New Mexico’s “Grand Canyon” and then end with an evening soak at the ancient hot springs of Ojo Caliente, a sacred place to may of the northern tribes. As we gather around a late night fire, we will be joined by a Native storyteller who will remind us of the power of story and the responsibility we have to honor our own stories. After a good night of sleep, we will have a traditional New Mexican breakfast and head south for the festival.
Dog Star Ranch: A $1,000,000 capital campaign
Film for Change and our strategic partner Dog Star Ranch continue our effort to realize the dream of an off-grid ranch and retreat center for filmmakers, writers, artists, musicians, change-makers and youth in the White Mountains of Arizona. Currently, the 360 acre ranch is home to four horses, a couple of dogs, wildlife and roaming cattle. We will utilize sustainable building methods to further steward the land and create housing and a community commons for changemakers, visionaries and artists to attend workshops, master classes and to just have the necessary time to retreat and create inspiring works of art.

One Week’s Wisdom Project
Film for Change is proud to support Cosima Lux, founder and director of One Week’s Wisdom Project. Initially, we became involved to support their efforts in documenting change in Haiti through a soccer clinic, midwifery and an international youth mural project. Then the earthquake hit and we shifted our focus to help in any way we could. Well, OWWP and Film for Change are helping bring technology and humanity together as we leveraged contacts and resources to send atmospheric water generators to the hospitals in Haiti. Water shortages are not only hampering progress but also impacting the quality of health care providers can give. Through Air2Water’s patented atmospheric water generators and a host of help along the way, including soccer star Tony Sennah among many others, OWWP will be able to improve water quality and access in the hospitals.
